Secure Password Management On The Go!
News » Download statistics after four months
I started KeePassMobile about 4 months ago. Here are the download statistics for this time:
Here is are the donation statistics for the same time:
To keep up development speed, this project costs me much time and money (domain, homepage, traffic, ...) and so I am seriously considering to charge the next big feature that will come with the next version (V0.8): save/encrypt KeePass databases. My plan is not to sell KeePassMobile. You will be able to use all basic functions (load, decrypt, search,...) without paying a cent, but to charge activating the advanced features.
KeePassMobile would remain free of course, but free as in freedom of speech and not free as in free beer any more.
I set up a poll to hear your voice on this topic (poll closed in the meanwhile)
Sir please dont charge for the future version and advanced feature of adding entries...
I am an engg student and studying java in my curriculum and would like to help you with devel. Please reply here... i will check back soon...
I have helped with another j2me app 'ReadManiac'...FOSS
pls dnt charge

Hello Francois
thanks for your detail comment on this topic.
Actually it is not about getting paid, but to honor good work.
This is my feeling of donationware: if you are happy with the functionality, the quality, the support and the progress of free software you should think about a donation. Because, to keep all this things up do someone cost much work. Work, that should be honored.
Regards
Christoph

I can understand your point regarding money, it's always a delicate one regarding developing free software. I asks myself the same question too as I'm considering developing a J2ME application in the future.
What is it that your are trying to get paid for, your time or your costs? If's it's just because of the costs of the website (domain, homepage, traffic, etc.) then why can't you use a free open source hosting site such as sourceforce, google code, etc.? Actually why aren't you using one of these? Do you have other costs excluding your time such as the tools you used to develop KPM??
If you're trying to get paid for your time, it's a perfectly legitimate need, however bear in mind that while you can ask money to distribute free and open source software you can't really sell it (as in forcing people to pay) since there's no way to enforce the sale (as done with binary only release in proprietary software). Also would you have developed KPM if other clients were not free?
In my opinion instead of disabling a feature you could have a nag screen for a couple seconds that would encourage donations. It's a lesser forcing than crippleware. In fact, in J2ME applications it's already a nag to ask for permission to read and write data. And removing this nag on all devices implies additional costs linked to the singing of the application.
So maybe you could ask for money for the signed version while keeping the unsigned free.
